The rule that breaks it

Every day counts, so every miss subtracts. Around day forty the streak becomes the point instead of the record, and the first genuinely busy week ends it. Most abandoned attempts stop in February.

The underlying goal, a year of your life at one clip per day, never required the streak. It required 365 clips, and the constraint that they be filmed on consecutive days going forward is something the challenge added, not something the format needs.

Doing it backwards

Point Dayjavu at the last twelve months and it will report how many days in that range already contain video. For most people the number is startling, several hundred, because a year of ordinary phone use produces far more footage than it feels like.

From there the challenge becomes selection: work through the calendar choosing one clip per day. There is no streak to protect because the year has already happened.

And then forwards, if you want

Having a substantially complete year already built changes the psychology of continuing. Adding today to something that already runs three hundred days is a small act; starting from nothing tomorrow is not.

Compilations are not frozen once exported, so you can keep adding days and re-export whenever you like.

A different approach

• Build the last twelve months from footage you already have.
• No streak to break. The year is already recorded.
• Days with nothing are skipped rather than counted as failures.
• Keep adding days afterwards and re-export.

Is it still the challenge if I did not film daily?

The output is the same: a year of your life at one clip per day. Whether that counts is between you and whoever set the rules.

What if I only have footage for two hundred days?

You get a two-hundred-day film. It is not a failed year. The gaps read as part of the record.

Can I combine a retroactive year with a going-forward one?

Yes. Keep one compilation and extend it as new days accumulate.
