Your iPhone has been recording in 4K for years. Most apps that assemble those clips quietly hand you back 1080p, because rendering at full resolution on someone else’s server is expensive. Dayjavu renders on your device, so 4K is simply a setting.

Two quality settings, both on device

Standard exports at 1080p, 1920 × 1080 landscape or 1080 × 1920 portrait. It is faster to render, smaller to send, and correct for anything destined for a messaging app or social feed.

High exports at 4K, 3840 × 2160 or 2160 × 3840. Slower and considerably larger, and the right choice when the file is an archive rather than a post, or when it will be watched on a television.

When 4K is worth the file size

A year-in-review watched on a TV at Christmas is the clearest case: 1080p upscaled to a large panel looks noticeably softer than native 4K, particularly on the wide landscape shots.

It also matters if the compilation is the thing you intend to keep. Displays keep improving, and a 4K master will hold up in a way a 1080p export will not. For a recap you will send to five people and never open again, standard is the sensible choice.

What resolution cannot fix

Export resolution is a ceiling, not an upgrade. If a day’s clip was filmed at 720p, exporting the compilation at 4K will not add detail to it. It will simply preserve everything else at full quality. Mixed-resolution source footage is normal and looks fine.
